Fight Back Against State Bill to Expand Credit Union Field of Membership
As state lawmakers begin their annual legislative spring break, MBA needs your help to stop legislation that would expand the field of membership for credit unions.
As previously shared in our Legislative Update, House Bill 1222 would allow credit unions to access the Kansas City metropolitan statistical area, St. Louis MSA and any contiguous counties up to 1 million in population.
“The Republican freshman lawmaker from St. Charles who filed the measure intends to move the bill because he considers it an ‘economic development’ issue,” said MBA Senior Vice President David Kent.
To prevent this from happening, MBA needs you to contact your state House representatives.
“Many legislators don’t understand the fundamental differences between a bank and a credit union, so they may not be aware how dangerous this bill is,” Kent said. “Urge your state representatives to oppose this misguided legislation and to share that opposition directly with the bill’s sponsor.”
MBA encourages bankers to speak with representatives while they are in their districts next week. In addition, make plans to meet with your lawmakers at the Capitol during our Target Banker visits to help educate lawmakers on this topic. Target Banker visits continue through April.
