7 Segways In 2019

MBA sets $77,000 goal for Segs4Vets

Seven.

It’s a prime number. It’s the number of days in a week. It’s a lucky number for some. It’s the number of books in the Harry Potter series from J.K. Rowling. And, it’s the title of the 1995 crime thriller starring Springfield native Brad Pitt.

This fall, however, seven takes on a new meaning.

Segs4Vets“Seven is key to this year’s Segs4Vets campaign,” said Max Cook, president and CEO of the Missouri Bankers Association. “We can purchase seven Segways for $77,000 if we reach our 2019 goal, and this will push Segs4Vets donations from MBA and our members pass $700,000!”

Segs4Vets provides Segway mobile transporters to help severely injured veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

MBA adopted Segs4Vets as its designated charity in 2009. Since then, banks in Missouri, their employees and communities and MBA associate members have raised more than $623,000 to support Segs4Vets. Donations from MBA members and their communities exceeded $74,000 in 2018.

“Our goal is slightly more than last year’s donation,” Cook said, “but I believe we can reach it. The generosity of our members and their communities to support our veterans through Segs4Vets amazes me each year. I am proud of our industry’s commitment to support the men and women who make sacrifices to support our freedoms.”

Launched in 2005, Segs4Vets is a grassroots program administered by volunteers. The cost to provide a Segway is nearly $10,000. The cost for an ALLY chair, a modified Segway chair, is $15,000. For every $1 donated, 98 cents supports Segs4Vets’ mission — empowering injured soldiers to live independently.

MBA’s 11th Annual Segs4Vets Day is Friday, Nov. 8. MBA encourages banks participating in this year’s campaign to share photos of their Segs4Vets activities on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and to tag MBA (mobankers) and to use these hashtags — #7Segways #Segs4Vets77k and #Segs4Vets700k — in their posts. The association will recognize 2019 donors at the Executive Management Conference on Dec. 5 in St. Louis and in the December issue of The Missouri Banker.
