A Decade Of Giving

MBA kicks off its 10th annual fundraising for Segs4Vets

At the Missouri Bankers Association’s annual convention in June 2009, a man on a Segway stood before a room of hundreds of bankers. He shared how Segways were helping veterans who sustained injuries that caused permanent disability or trouble walking. Unfortunately, many veterans couldn’t afford a Segway. The gentleman on the Segway asked bankers if they would consider donating to his charitable organization, Segs4Vets.

Segs4VetsWith that presentation, MBA began its its first Segs4Vets campaign. In December 2009, MBA and its members donated more than $23,000 to Segs4Vets.

Fast forward to 2018, and MBA is conducting its 10th fundraising campaign for Segs4Vets, the association’s designated charity. Launched in 2005, Segs4Vets provides Segway mobile transporters to help severely injured veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Since 2009, banks in Missouri, their employees and communities and MBA associate members have raised more than $549,000 to support Segs4Vets.

Segs4Vets is a grassroots program administered by volunteers. The cost to provide a Segway is nearly $10,000. The cost for an ALLY chair, a modified Segway chair, is $15,000. For every $1 donated, 98 cents supports Segs4Vets’ mission — empowering injured soldiers to live independently.

In 2017, MBA members and their communities made their largest donation to Segs4Vets — $160,592. This year’s Segs4Vets goal is $75,000.

MBA’s 10th Annual Segs4Vets Day is Friday, Nov. 9. MBA encourages banks participating in this year’s campaign to share photos of their Segs4Vets fundraisers on Facebook and Twitter and to tag MBA. The association will recognize 2018 donors in December.
